A home-network check

Put the smart stuff on its own island.

The doorbell, the bulbs and the bargain plug do not need to sit beside the laptop with your bank logins. List what is on your network and what each thing needs to reach. The page draws today's networks, proposes three zones - trusted, smart devices, guest & work - and rates your router's settings. Ask for the check when you want every device placed, every crossing decided and the steps in order.

Try a home:

1 What is on your network

One device a line: device | kind | network now | needs to reach, e.g. Backyard camera | camera | Home | Family NAS. Only the name is required - the page guesses the kind from it. "Needs to reach" names other devices on the list (casting to the TV, printing), comma-separated.

0 devices on 0 networks. Drop a .txt or .csv, or

2 Your router

Wireless security
Admin password
WPS button / PIN
UPnP
Firmware
Admin from the internet
A second network?

Not sure? The router's admin page (often printed on its sticker) shows each of these. The ratings are common home-network advice, not a scan of your router. Before changing a setting, write down any new password first.

3 The map

What the page sees

    The rules the page uses
    • Trusted = computers, phones, tablets, storage, watches. Smart devices = TVs, speakers, cameras, doorbells, locks, lights, plugs, sensors, hubs, printers, consoles, appliances and anything unrecognised. Guest & work = visitors and work-issued gear.
    • Mixed = one network carries trusted devices beside smart or guest ones.
    • Links: trusted reaching smart (casting, printing) is usually allowed one way; smart reaching into trusted, or anything crossing the guest zone, is usually blocked.
    • Lock down first = a critical setting (default admin password, open or WEP security, admin from the internet, firmware out of support). Split it = a mixed network, a risky link or a setting worth changing. Sound = none of those.
    • These are rules of thumb from common home-network guidance, applied to what you typed - not a scan of your network.

    4 Get the check

Metered. The check reads your list and the map, places every device in a zone, allows or blocks each link that crosses zones (and says how), lists the router changes and the steps in order, and says sound, split it or lock down first. The page redraws the plan from its placements and checks each one against the list.

    Take it with you

The .csv lists every device with its kind, the network it is on now, the page's zone, the planned zone, what it needs to reach and the check's decisions - a re-pairing checklist for the evening you move them.
